Valley Community for Recycling Solutions
Environment
Our vision is to establish the Mat-Su Borough as a model zero landfill community. Our mission is to operate a zero-contamination resource recovery & training park while educating, training, and fostering partnerships to reduce, reuse, and recycle for the long term good of all.
VCRS was founded in 1998 by grassroots volunteers out of parking lots. We now serve over 150 people a day, six days a week out of a drive-through drop off that includes areas for community reuse. Our building houses the drive-through, processing floor, bale storage, office, classroom, and bookstore.
We accept twelve categories of household recyclables, including various papers, plastics, and metals. In 2024, 1338.3 tons of cardboard was recycled with us, 657 tons of which stayed local to a business in the Mat-Su. There is a glass crusher on order as of 2025 to facilitate glass recycling, hopefully before 2026.
Our classroom facilitates field trips and presentations for every age, as well as community outreach events, such as sustainable gift wrapping during the holiday season.
Our bookstore features books dropped off for recycling - unsalvageable books are processed and recycled, while books in good condition are sold for quarters.
Our office features a resident cat - Glenn. (He enjoys visitors.)
