Bird Treatment and Learning Center Bird TLC

Animals

We care for over 500 injured and orphaned wild birds annually from across the state, giving them a second chance at life in the wild. Injured birds come to our clinic from the Anchorage Bowl, Kenai Peninsula, Fairbanks, and off-the-road villages.
Most of the birds we see in our clinic have been negatively affected by human activities and the human footprint. Birds may suffer injuries when they are struck by a car, attacked by a cat or off-leash dog, collide with a window, become entangled in fishing line, or ingest trash, pesticides, or lead. Sadly, some birds have even been intentionally harmed by humans. We consider it our responsibility to provide these birds a second chance at life in the wild.
We are permitted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to rehabilitate and release any bird species protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Every year, our education team presents approximately 100 classroom programs to K-12 students and the public, engages youth in summer camps and the Avian Teen Crew, and attends community outreach events to inspire others to appreciate and care for the wild birds we share the world with.

The stars of our educational programs are our Ambassador Birds. The cast includes a Snowy and Great Horned Owl, Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Black-billed Magpie, and American Crow. Program participants make a personal connection with our Ambassadors and leave feeling empowered to help wild birds.
