Alaska Institute for Justice
Human Services
Our mission is to promote and protect the human rights of all Alaskans including immigrants, refugees and Alaska Native communities. We house three programs: Alaska Immigration Justice Project (Legal Services); Language Interpreter Center; Alaska Climate Justice Program.
Our core program, Alaska Immigration Justice Project, provides essential legal services to immigrants and refugees across Alaska, with a special focus on survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, as well as people fleeing persecution. Our experienced attorneys offer high-quality, low-cost or free representation, and make sure clients understand their rights and options under U.S. immigration law.
The Language Interpreter Center provides access to trained Alaska-based and national language interpreters and translators who remove communication barriers between legal, medical and social service professionals and limited English proficient individuals. Our services include connecting people with limited English proficiency to trained interpreters and translators, offering interpreter training for bilingual individuals, helping agencies develop language access plans, and providing workshops on working effectively with interpreters.
The Climate Justice Program works in partnership with Alaska Native Tribal communities to uphold Tribal sovereignty and protect human rights as the climate crisis threatens their ancestral homelands. Increasing flooding, erosion, and permafrost thaw are devastating these communities, making this work more urgent than ever. As part of our ongoing mission, we are committed to dismantling policy barriers that obstruct Indigenous leadership and community-driven solutions—ensuring long-term resilience in the face of accelerating environmental change.
